Our Japanese Tetsubin cast iron teapots deliver a Zen type aura of calm and inspiration to the tea drinking ritual. The Tetsubin is a smaller, ornately embellished teapot designed for brewing the perfect pot of tea. A Tetsubin teapot can keep your tea hot for up to an hour. If cared for, a Tetsubin can last more than one lifetime! Has a stainless steel infuser basket and black enamel lined interior.
Testubin or cast iron pots were first used throughout Japan as kettles to boil water over an open fire and were usually hung above a hearth to also provide heat and humidity in cold weather.
In the mid 19th century, as infused teas such as Sencha became popular, brewing and serving the tea to friends and family in a tetsubin also became very popular. Designs and shapes have since evolved from simple and plain to detailed and ornate works of art as we know them today.

Using your tetubin for the first time:
- Thoroughly rince pot and infuser with hot water.
- NEVER use cleaning products on the inside or the outside of teapot. While the teapot is still warm, wipe the inside and outside with a dry cloth.
- Repeat this process at least 3 times.
- After thoroughly drying the teapot with a cloth, invert and allow to air dry before replacing the cover and infuser.
- Avoid contact with salts and oils.
- Do not place teapot in cold water while it is still warm.
If the care instrucitons are followed, your teapot should not rust as the inner surface has been coated with a black enamel. However, in the unlikely event that your teapot should rust, your teapot can still be used. The rust is non-toxic and safe.
Use a soft brush to clean the rusted area, then fill the pot with used tea leaves and boil water for 20 minutes. The tannic acid in the tea reacts with the rust and forms a natural seal against further rusting.

Serving your tea:
- Although in the olden days the tetsubin was heated above an open flame, NEVER heat your tetusbin over a stovetop exposed to flame or microwave oven.
- Heat water in a separate conventional stainless pot and use your tetsubin for brewing and serving only.
- Place tea in the stainless infuser. Adjust according to tea variety and preferred taste.
- Pour hot water into the teapot, cover and allow to brew for 3 to 5 minutes.
- Remove infuser and tea leaves and serve.
- Leaves may be used again depending on the quality of the tea.
